Luxexcel, a Netherlands-based company which describes itself as a pioneer in 3D printed ophthalmic lenses, has announced that its VisionPlatforms have now moved from the pilot phase to printing commercial lenses.
The company developed its 3D printing technology for fabricating functional lenses in 2009. In the last year, 5,000 lenses have been printed on VisionPlatforms installed in the US and Europe. As a result, Luxexcel lenses are being shipped to customers every day.
Fabio Esposito, CEO of Luxexcel: “By achieving this level of maturity we are ready to further grow the incredible potential of this technology and develop unique lenses both in ophthalmic and in smart eyewear. 3D printing is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between traditional lenses and the future of eyewear which resides in smart functionalities.”
The benefit of VisionPlatforms is the huge reduction in waste. When making lenses in the traditional way, not only is the process labor intensive but around 80% of material is wasted.
